Comcast Media Center, Comcast Sports Southeast / Charter Sports Southeast and Comcast Local Team Up For Delivering College Football on VOD
Comcast Digital Cable Customers Across the Country Gain Access to ACC, Big Ten, MAC and SEC Games, Game Recaps and Coaches Shows With ON DEMAND
Denver, CO, Sept 28, 2004 – Comcast Cable’s digital customers living in different parts of the country from their favorite college football teams have a new alternative for watching them: Comcast Cable’s ON DEMAND video-on-demand service. Throughout the season, Comcast Digital Cable customers with ON DEMAND will have an expanding choice of complete games, game recaps - which include a narrated script for weaving outstanding plays from each quarter into a complete game summary, and the entire half-hour weekly coaches’ shows from ACC, Big Ten and SEC teams.
Comcast Cable’s ON DEMAND delivery of college football on VOD is the result of a joint initiative involving Comcast Sports Southeast / Charter Sports Southeast (CSS), Comcast Local, a Michigan network covering local events and sports, and Comcast Media Center (CMC). The CMC operates a VOD content delivery network that serves all of Comcast Cable’s ON DEMAND -serviceable systems, delivering such VOD content as entire football games and 10- 15 minute games recaps within hours of the last play.
Events already in the VOD library include the University of Georgia – Georgia Southern season opener, which featured the spectacular debut performance of Georgia freshman running back Danny Ware, and opening weeks’ assessments by OSU’s Jim Tressel and Michigan’s Lloyd Carr.
“Making the games, recaps and coaches shows available via VOD is a great extension of the access that we provide to the Conferences and our viewers,” stated Mark Fuhrman, General Manager of Comcast Sports Southeast / Charter Sports Southeast. “This is just the beginning of how Video-On-Demand can expand the reach of sports programming and we are very pleased that, through our participation, ACC and SEC fans across the country can follow their teams more closely all season long.”
“ON DEMAND is another part of Comcast Local’s commitment to provide our customers with even more access to local sports programming in southeastern Michigan, especially teams that aren’t regularly featured in national or regional sports coverage,” stated Dave Almstead, Vice President and General Manager for Comcast Local. “Additionally, ON DEMAND is a great tool for expanding the scope of weekend sports by making these games and events available throughout the week and the season, providing more viewing choices for our customers.”
“We are very excited about this initiative with CSS and Comcast Local because it demonstrates the great potential of VOD technology and its value to cable viewers,” stated Gary Traver Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Comcast Media Center. “Providing greater national access to local sports lets the customer decide when and how they want to access it – whether it’s the entire game or the recap containing its greatest plays – which enriches and expands their viewing choices.”
Comcast Media Center is the industry’s most experienced provider of sports on demand content, beginning with its production of recaps of ESPN’s broadcasts of the NHL Conference and Stanley Cup Finals this past spring and daily recaps summarizing Outdoor Life Network’s extensive coverage of the Tour de France. It is also processing and delivering the weekly NFL Network’s VOD programs. The CMC’s VOD capabilities enable it to offer all-inclusive service from one central location, including editing, encoding, pre-encryption and full metadata services, and delivery to local VOD servers within hours of origination.
This football season marks the most ambitious schedule in the CSS network’s history. With 36 live games scheduled, CSS will provide more live football coverage than any other regional sports network in the country, featuring teams from 13 different athletic conferences.
Comcast Local, which launched in late August, recently announced an agreement with the Mid-American Conference that will provide extended coverage of Men's and Women's sports programming for an initial term of three years.
